The High Road 2024

An illustrated zine and photo story deconstructing the significance of the phrase for women.

“Take the high road, be the bigger person.”
This zine analyses what that phrase means to a woman, creating an environment for catharsis and reflection. Utilising the primary medium of writing, the work is supplemented by illustration, photography and fashion design.

The Prologue

This photo story serves as a visual prologue to the zine, serving as an explanation of the motives behind the project. The art direction draws inspiration from the nostalgic Tumblr era of girlhood, creating an atmosphere of comfort. The models are styled in tops that I’ve designed and sewn for this project.

The Zine
This project is a blend of many elements and the culmination of countless conversations.
The main body text is an academic literature review, and is supported by quotes from women I personally interviewed. These quotes are presented as letters; the handwritten aspect lends a personal, diary-like look to the zine.

The colours and textures are intended to evoke a sense of comfort and calm, offsetting the effects of the upsetting subject matter. Growing up, we were influenced by an aesthetic of femininity largely shaped by Western culture. This reinterpretation of that aesthetic incorporates prints inspired by the gorgeous block-printed textiles of India, subdued pastels, and beautifully vulnerable illustrations.

The Illustrations
This zine has been fully self-illustrated, cover to cover. The intensity of the illustrations parallels the emotions felt by these women. Brushstrokes are evident, emphasizing the emotional nature of the art. The collection of artwork includes direct depictions, as well as more metaphorical interpretations.
